A South Portland Little League All Star team hasn't played in a regional tournament in 50 years. The 2017 team is making the most of the chance to play in it this year.

An 8-5 win over Vermont Thursday afternoon gets the SoPo allstars closer to the LLWS in Williamsport. The Maine team is now 3-1 at the New England Regional in Bristol, Connecticut.

South Portland American plays New Hampshire Friday today at 1pm. The winner of that game plays Connecticut in the regional championship game Saturday at 1pm.

Only three teams from Maine have earned a spot at the Little League World Series. The last team to do it was Westbrook in 2005.

South Portland is two wins away.

NOTE: By the way, part of the experience for the New England Little League teams is visiting ESPN headquarters in Bristol.
