An event 2 years in the making

This Sunday March 6, the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor will be the site for the Maine State Junior High and Elementary School Cheering Championships. The competition is sponsored by the Calais Recreation Department.

This was one of the first pandemic cancellations in 2020

Cheering teams with performers in grades K-8 will participate in the competition for the first time since 2019. The 2020 competition was canceled just days before it was to take place due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. These cheer teams have been practicing for several months to take their turn in the spotlight.

Come one, come all

The competition will begin at 10:00 a.m. with doors to the Cross Insurance Center opening at 8:30 p.m. Entry fees for adults are $12 and student admission will $6. You can purchase tickets on the day of the competition or through the online box office link here.

Support the kids in a huge way

Many of the teams and competitors have been patiently waiting for 2 years to take to the mats and display their talents. I encourage as many people as possible to consider dropping in to watch and support these young athletes. A lot of these children have been attending the high school competitions and recent basketball tournament at the Cross Center and have wondered when they could get a turn at taking center stage. Now is their time and this can be a huge morale booster to our youth.

The winners are?

We would like to wish the best of luck to all of the tumblers and cheer squads performing this weekend and we will report back to the public the results, once we have them. Stay tuned!
