June is ‘Pride Month’ So What Does That Mean For You?

The month of June has become known as Pride Month to LGBT community as a time to celebrate and remember and educate.

June was chosen because of the Stonewall Riots in 1969.  I just learned about this. t According to Wikipedia “the Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay (LGBT) community against a police raid that took place June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan. They are widely considered to constitute the most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States.”

The Rainbow Flag came along in 1978 according to Wikipedia and has a rich history. It has been through a few changes over the years and had some different meanings but all of them revolve around Pride and earlier version of the rainbow flag was a symbol of peace.

Pride Month can have a lot of activities, activism and symbolism. It has grown for the last 50 years and continues to grow and change.  You don't have to know the terms or  history but if you come with a loving heart I am sure you will be welcome.
