Maine State Police say one person was killed and two others were seriously injured following a head-on collision Sunday afternoon on Route 1 in Bridgewater.

Bridgewater Fire Department and first responders were at the scene tending to the occupants when troopers arrived at around 3:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Chad Fuller.

Police say it appeared that a 2018 Honda CRV was traveling south when it crossed the center line and struck a 2018 Toyota 4Runner head-on. The 73-year-old driver of the CRV, who was from Old Town, was transported to Northern Light A.R. Gould Hospital in Presque Isle, where they succumbed to their injuries. Police will not release the victim’s identity until their family can be notified.

The driver of the Toyota 4Runner, 62-year-old year old Steven Corriveau of Van Buren and his passenger 59-year-old Brenda Corriveau were also transported by Crown Ambulance to Northern Light A.R. Gould with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The Corriveaus were then transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, one by ambulance and one by Life Flight, Sgt. Fuller said.

Police say the victims of the crash were all wearing seat belts.

Route 1 in Bridgewater was closed for a short time Sunday afternoon. Maine State Police were assisted at the scene by the Aroostook County Sheriff's Office. The accident remains under investigation.

We’ll have more information as it becomes available.
