Maine ranked third overall in the safety report, placing first for the lowest rate of assaults and third for the lowest rate of murders and nonnegligent manslaughters.
The state also ranked eighth for climate disaster losses, 12th for its uninsured population share, 14th for sex offenders, 19th for fatal workplace injuries and 25th for traffic fatalities, based on the population and exposure measures used in the report.

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said the safest states combine low crime rates, safe roads and strong job markets with workplace safety, disaster preparedness and residents’ efforts to protect their communities.
Vermont ranked as the safest state, supported by low unemployment, relatively low rates of violent crime and identity theft complaints, and strong road safety measures.

And there you have it! Maine’s particularly low rates of assaults and murders helped place the state near the top of WalletHub’s nationwide safety ranking.
