Reis was sentenced in U.S. District Court by Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr. He was also fined $2,000.

On May 30, 2016, Reis was located close to the international border, adjacent to a beaten down trail, and was found on the ground in a fetal position covered by branches.  Fingerprint results revealed that he was a citizen of Turkey who in 1998 had been removed from the United States.

The investigation was conducted by the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Border Patrol.
