Law enforcement agencies across Maine are reporting a steady increase in drug busts involving heroin, and health officials are not surprised, as they are seeing an increasing number of overdoses from the drug, as well.

While it may sound like a shocking number, drug agents have already made nearly 100 heroin arrests this year. That’s a lot, considering that in 2012, there were only about 130 heroin busts made all year.

Unfortunately, it almost seems that if heroin users are not being arrested for possession of the drug, they are dying, since statistics indicate that heroin deaths are becoming more widespread every year – three times more in 2012 than the prior year.

Both law enforcement and health officials say that this spike in heroin busts and overdoses is due to prescription drugs becoming harder to get, while heroin is cheaper and becoming more prevalent in suburban American.
