With an active recall recently being released on a popular cold and flu medicine that’s been distributed here in Maine, it’s important to know that another medicine is being recalled, but this time, it’s not for any symptoms related to being sick.

But first, what does it mean when a product is 'recalled?'

According to the Food and Drug Administration,

Recall is a voluntary action that takes place because manufacturers and distributors carry out their responsibility to protect the public health and well-being from products that present a risk of injury or gross deception or are otherwise defective.

Essentially, the goal of a voluntary recall, which is what we’re dealing with here, is to remove as many products from the marketplace as possible to minimize danger to the consumer and to minimize the company's exposure to any future lawsuits.

So, what pills that were sold in Maine are being recalled?

The company 'Today the World' announced on February 2nd that they are issuing a voluntary recall on ‘Sustain’ herbal dietary supplement capsules and 'Schwinnng' capsules. The latter of which's tagline on the packaging says "PUT A ROCKET IN YOUR POCKET."

The FDA publication states that these products are marketed as dietary supplements for male sexual enhancement.

The company announcement on the FDA’s website reads,

FDA analysis has found the products to contain undeclared Tadalafil and Nortadalafil (structurally similar to Tadalafil). Tadalafil and Nortadalafil are active drug ingredients known for treatment of male erectile dysfunction. The presence of Tadalafil and Nortadalafil in Sustain capsules and Schwinnng capsules makes them unapproved new drugs for which the safety and efficacy have not been established and, therefore subject to recall.

In their 'Risk Statement,' the company explains that the consumption and use of these products may interact poorly with nitrates found in some prescription drugs and "may cause a significant drop in blood pressure that may be life-threatening."

Additionally, they advise that people with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease may be at risk, highlighting that "adult males who use nitrates for cardiac conditions are most at risk."

To this point, no adverse events have been reported.
