The impact drove the van several hundred feet off the road, down an embankment and it then crashed into a stand of trees. Killed in the crash was 59 year old Richard Charest of Winthrop, an employee of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home in Winthrop.  He died at the scene.  Charest was transporting a body back to the funeral home when the crash took place about 6pm.  Both Charest and the body remained inside the Ford Flex minivan.

Troopers said the van was struck from behind by a Humvee at the crest of a hill on Route 202, near the intersection of Daggett Hill Road.   The Hummer was operated by 58 year old Donald Asselin of Sabattus, who had minor injuries but did not require immediate medical attention. Traffic at the crash site was detoured for about three hours as Troopers investigated the crash last night,  and additional work was expected to take place today at the crash site today.   State Police are asking for anyone who witnessed the crash to call their dispatch center in Gray at 657-3030.
