I like to use this little space on the interweb to introduce you to artists you may have missed along the way or artists that I think you should know about.  I believe it's my duty as a music connoisseur.  Today I will tell you about one of my favorite singer/songwriter/artists of all time, John Hiatt.

John Hiatt has, for all intents and purposes, had two careers.  He began in the late 60s/early 70s as a singer/songwriter that scored a few hits with other artists.  At the same time he was releasing his own albums that were a little left of center.  In the early 80s he was even considered New Wave.  From the start of his career up to the mid 80s Hiatt enjoyed a drink more than anything else.

At the same time that he cleaned up his act, big names started to record his songs.  Bonnie Raitt had a huge comeback hit with 'Thing Called Love.'  The Jeff Healey Band scored with 'Angel Eyes,' and the list goes on.  Right around 1987, Hiatt released the first album of what fans call the sober trilogy, Bring the Family.  Three albums that basically put John Hiatt on the map, or at least let him hover under the radar and rebuild a career.

The gruff voice, the imitable wit, and the genius storytelling are why I believe you need to know the artistry of John Hiatt.  Once you do though, you have to promise to keep him a secret, just between us.

Got an idea for a 'hidden gem?'  Tell me on Facebook.
