Molly was signed up with a dog registry, so all we had to do was call the number on her tag, give them the registration number, and they called her owners to report that she'd been found.
As much as we hated to see her go, we were glad that she was home.
But then the silence came back. No toenails in the hall in the morning. No one to catch that bit of sausage that got away from a plate.
I think, before too long, we'll be looking again for a furry friend to fill our house with love and mischief. A house is way too quiet without at least one pretty puppy.
