In the 14 years I've been with my husband, Jim, we've had several dogs. The latest was a black and white pitbull mix named Toby who was the sweetest boy ever. Toby made friends with everyone and loved kids most of all.

Unfortunately, we lost our boy a few months ago after a brief illness. Anyone who's lost a pet knows it's a tough thing to get over. We've given ourselves a break from dogs while we grieve the loss.

But the other day, a neighborhood dog jumped his fence and Jim can across her in the road. When he couldn't find the sweet girl's owners immediately, he brought her home while we figured it out.

Molly was only in our house for less than two hours. But in that time, she wormed her way into our hearts. It was so amazing to hear her running down the hall after a tossed toy.

Microchips or Dog Registries are So Important in Maine, When Dogs Can Wander Far

Molly was signed up with a dog registry, so all we had to do was call the number on her tag, give them the registration number, and they called her owners to report that she'd been found.

As much as we hated to see her go, we were glad that she was home.

But then the silence came back. No toenails in the hall in the morning. No one to catch that bit of sausage that got away from a plate.

I think, before too long, we'll be looking again for a furry friend to fill our house with love and mischief. A house is way too quiet without at least one pretty puppy.
