A Maine resident has tested positive for EEE, which is carried by mosquitoes.

Maine Resident Diagnosed with Eastern Equine Encephalitis

The name of the individual has not been released, but a post on the Maine CDC's Facebook page says they live in Penobscot County. There's no word on their condition.

EEE is transmitted through mosquito bites and the risk ithis year is severe for Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, and Waldo counties, after all the recent rainstorms. The rest of the state's risk level is high.

In most cases, Eastern Equine Encephalitis can cause a fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea, and vomiting.

More severe conditions can develop, including confusion, seizures, coma, paralysis, and permanent brain damage. Meningitis and encephalitis can develop.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention says there's no specific treatment for EEE, but rest, fluids, and pain medication may help relieve some of the symptoms.

Anyone who thinks they may have contracted Eastern Equine Encephalitis is encouraged to consult their doctor.

Maine Residents Should Take Precautions Against Mosquitoes After EEE Diagnosis

Mosquitoes love standing water, and can even lay eggs in small amounts of it. To prevent mosquito bites, health officials advise getting rid of standing water in your yard, including plant pots, cups, buckets,  yard toys, tarps and other containers.

When planning to spend any amount of time outside, officials with the Maine CDC say residents should wear protective clothing and use propellant, as well as avoiding outdoor activities in the evenings when mosquitoes are most active.
