I can’t be the only one who’s feeling total envy for all the people taking vacations in tropical places.

What Causes SAVE?

Many times, I’ve talked about SAD in the news, or Seasonal Affective Disorder. It’s a real condition that can cause mild to severe depression in people who are having a hard time dealing with the colder weather and shorter days. At first, I thought that’s what was going on with me. I’ve been feeling tired, moody, and downright grumpy lately. But then I realized it’s not SAD. It’s SAVE.

Okay, I made that up. But, seriously, I believe it’s a real thing. As I sit in my socks, still damp from the snow that slid down my jeans and into my boots, I’m looking at pictures of my friends who are vacationing on some tropical island. Family members just got back from a week in Florida and are sporting beautiful dark tans. And then there’s my friend who spent last week in Mexico. And what did I do last week? Slipped and nearly fell down just walking to my car.

What Are Symptoms?

My name is Cindy and I suffer from SAVE – Seasonal Affective Vacation Envy. I want to go on vacation. I want to spend an afternoon sitting on a lounge chair in my bathing suit sipping Pina Coladas on the beach. My wardrobe should be shorts, t-shirts, and sunglasses instead of boots, a parka, and gloves. I want to temporarily ditch the computer and headphones and pack sunscreen and flip flops in my bag each morning.

How Will You Deal With It?

Unfortunately, my bank account will only support a trip to the grocery store for some frozen coconut shrimp to heat up in the microwave. So, this weekend, maybe Jim and I will turn up the heat, put on our shorts, and watch ‘Six Days Seven Nights’ with the blinds drawn so we can’t see the snow. Oh. And I won’t open Facebook to see even more of my friends who are living the vacations I wish I could take.
