Covered Bridge Collapsed and Truck Fell into River in Maine
An overweight gravel truck fell through Babb’s Covered Bridge in Windham and crashed into the Presumpscot River around 12:45 pm Friday.
Bridge Collapsed and Driver Injured
The driver, 37-year-old Joshua Polewarzyk from Limington, had minor injuries and was able to get out of the F750 truck.
Police said “Excessive Weight” Caused Collapse
The Gorham Police Department said the excessive weight of the truck caused the wooden floor of the bridge to collapse and give way. The truck plummeted into the river.
Road and Bridge Closed
The bridge will be closed for months. Hurricane Road will also be closed to traffic.
Bridge Inspection and Weight Limit
Every two years the bridge is inspected and most recently in July 2024, said MaineDOT. The weight limit is three tons.
