Two men suffered serious injuries early Wednesday morning when their vehicle struck a moose in Amity.

Maine State Police say 34-year-old Jake DeHahn of Amity was driving south on U.S. Route 1 with a passenger shortly before 6 a.m. when a moose entered the roadway.

DeHahn’s 1999 Audi hit and killed the moose and then traveled across a field where it came to rest in a wood line, according to a news release from Corporal Corey Hafford.

Police say DeHahn was trapped in the car and Houlton Fire Department had to use the Jaws of Life to free him.

DeHahn and his passenger, 37-year-old Josh Burgos, sustained "serious but not life-threatening injuries," Hafford said. Both men were transported by Houlton Ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital. It’s not known if they were wearing their seat belts.

Troopers Adam Bell and Jared Sylvia investigated the crash.
