A first grader from Rumford Elementary School was killed after he was hit by a school bus after he fell off his bike into the road.

NewsCenter Maine reports that the school released a statement to parents saying that the entire RSU 10 community is grieving the loss. There will be counselors on hand at its Mountain Valley Schools on Thursday.

There were witnesses that said the crash happened just after 3 in the afternoon along Waldo Street, close to an elementary school, according to NewsCenter Maine. Police say when the boy tried to brake he and his bike fell into the road and that's when a rear tire of a school bus hit him.

The 6-year-old boy was taken to the hospital where he passed away, the news station reported. Maine State Police are helping the Rumford police investigate.

NewsCenterMaine stated that four other students were on the bus and no one on the bus was hurt. RSU 10's statement said they are cooperating with the investigation, according to the news station.
