On Wednesday, September 7, just in time for harvest, learn a piece of Aroostook County tradition through the Society’s quarterly presentations. It all begins at 5:30 p.m. and it's free and open to the public.

In addition to a short video on harvest, Historical Society member Richard Rand will have his 1946 potato truck on hand in the parking lot to give a brief demonstration.  The video will be shown in the McCain Conference Room located on the second floor of TAMC’s East Annex at 140 Academy Street.

Potato harvest has a rich history here in Aroostook County.  People in other states and even downstate are amazed that our high schoolers get out of school to help during harvest,” explained Kimberly Smith, secretary and treasurer of the Presque Isle Historical Society’s Board of Directors and the presenter at these quarterly events.  “Maine produces 4% of the national potato crop with 96% of that from Aroostook County.  In fact, the first acre of Aroostook County potatoes was actually planted and harvested right here in Presque Isle on the Rolfe farm (formerly in Maysville).”

Presque Isle Historical Society’s mission is to study, promote and preserve the history, culture, heritage and physical artifacts of Presque Isle for present and future generations.  For more information on the Society and its programs and events, please visit www.pihistory.org, call 762-1151, or e-mail pihistoricalsociety@hotmail.com.
