This week, a team of 15 runners from northern and coastal Maine will run a relay from Houlton to Brewer to launch an effort called "Minutes to Miles" in memory of McKenna Ward.

Organizer Kirk Ward says the goal or the run is to draw attention to the long-term effects of cancer treatment through chemotherapy and radiation and to assist the development of the pediatric clinic at the Lafayette Family Cancer Center in Brewer.

The 120-mile trek will begin in Houlton at 8 p.m. on Thursday, taking runners through the Haynesville woods that night, before wrapping up Friday around noontime in the parking lot at EMMC's Lafayette Center.

Ward says the idea for 'Minutes to Miles' came about by calculating the number of minutes his daughter spent in treatment at Lafayette, and converting it into miles.

The relay on November 5-6, Ward says, will begin his effort to run 1,717 miles to bring perspective to the normal life of a child with cancer.
