Houlton Regional Hospital Closing Labor & Delivery Unit in Maine

The Houlton Regional Hospital said they are closing the inpatient Labor and Delivery Unit on May 2, 2025.

Women’s Health Services

The OB/GYN physicians’ office will remain open for women’s healthcare services.

Difficult Decisions

The hospital said on Facebook, “this is a painful decision for us and was not made lightly. It is something that we have been grappling with for some time.”

Volume of Patients Declining

The steady decline in volume of patients in the Labor and Delivery Unit led to the decision. An issue that is affecting many rural hospitals across the country, said the hospital.

Connect with Other Facilities

A spokesperson said “We sympathize with the expectant mothers in our community who had chosen Houlton Regional Hospital to provide their care. We will be working diligently with them to connect them to OB services at the facilities of their choosing.”
