A Maine man who allegedly made threats against the University of New England is now facing potential jail time.

Maine Man Pleads Guilty After Making Threats on Social Media

Blake Tibbetts, 25, pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court in Portland to transmitting a threatening interstate communication.

The U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Maine, reports Tibbetts made a post on the social media platform known as 'X' (formerly Twitter), in which he used a racial epithet in an angry exchange with another X user.

Mr. Tibbetts allegedly threatened to pay "a visit VERY soon" to the user's "kind" and send "them" his "condolences."

According to the Portland Press Herald, the police were alerted after Tibbetts made threats toward the University of New England in Biddeford while at a restaurant in Cornish in 2025.

He allegedly said that he wanted to use an explosive device to hurt people on the campus.

He was arrested the next day, telling law enforcement that he had snapped and wanted to take his anger out on people, but knew that it would be murder.

A search of his home by the State Fire Marshal's Office resulted in the seizure of bomb-making devices.

During their search, investigators found emails stating that Tibbetts' X account had been suspended due to posts that violated the platform's terms.

Upon further analysis, investigators found the racially charged and threatening statement for which he was in court this week.

Tibbetts now faces a maximum term of imprisonment for five years, a maximum fine of $250,000, and a maximum supervised release term of three years.

He will be sentenced at a later date.
