If you know, you know.

We have a very special place to call home here in Maine. And although we don’t need those from away to know it, there’s another national survey that reports what we already know.

Maine is one of the safest states in the entire country.

We know it. And now more from away will know it. Maine is near the top of the 50 safest states.

The reputation of Maine is very interesting. Some from away know the day-to-day beauty and simplicity and spirit and compassion of Mainers.  Some have no clue. There are some Americans who have no idea about what we get to experience day after day.

And that’s okay.

On to the survey.

There are many different potential threats to one’s safety.  Think crime, weather, pollution, dangerous workplaces.

And some states keep their residents safer than others.

The survey from WalletHub compared the 50 states on key safety indicators like assaults per capita to loss amount from climate disasters and dozens and dozens of other factors….Think personal and residential safety, financial safety, Road safety, and Emergency preparedness.

For example, Results Show

  • Rhode Island has the fewest murders per 100 thousand residents.
  • Idaho has the fewest thefts per 1 thousand residents.
  • New Jersey has the most law-enforcement employees per 100 thousand residents.
  • Delaware has the lowest share of high school students who were bullied online.

But on average, Maine is far ahead of all those states.

Overall, Maine is just behind Vermont when it comes to the overall rank of safest states in the U.S.

And we are top ten in every category except workplace safety. And that might well be the number of high injury risk jobs that so many hard-working Mainers do.

So let the chant begin. We’re number two.  We’re number two.

Or maybe let’s just not acknowledge the survey at all. Do we really want the word getting out?

Stay safe out there Maine.
