Maine Named One of America’s Least Religious States in 2025
According to a new report, our Pine Tree State has been ranked as one of the least religious states in the country for 2025.
Maine has always liked to move to the beat of its own drum—we’re the only state with one syllable, the only state that borders just one other state (spoiler: we’ll get to that one soon), and now this ranking might just be another case of us doing our ‘own thing.’ The real question is… where did we land on the list?

So, with that in mind, how do we know which states are considered ‘more’ religious than others—and what does that even mean? What criteria is this based on?
SmileHub ranked the most religious states in 2025 by analyzing all 50 states across three main areas: Religious Interest & Places of Worship, Religious Education & Careers, and Religion-Affiliated Organizations. Using 13 weighted metrics scored on a 100-point scale (with adjustments for population size where necessary), they calculated each state’s weighted average to create the final rankings.

Alright, having covered that, where did ‘Vacationland’ rank when it comes to how religious we are compared to other states, and what factors played into those rankings?
According to SmileHub and their report highlighting the ‘Most Religious States in 2025,’ Maine ranked 49th overall, 48th in ‘Religious Interest and Places of Worship,’ 40th in ‘Religious Education and Careers,’ and 47th in ‘Religion-Affiliated Organizations.’
Maine may have ranked near the bottom, but New Hampshire actually came in last at 50th overall, with fellow New England neighbor Vermont close by at 48th.
On the other side of the list, Virginia ranked as the most religious state in the country, followed by Tennessee in 2nd and Alabama in 3rd.

And there you have it! Maine has been ranked as the second least religious state in the country for 2025, just behind our neighbors to the west, New Hampshire.
