It all started in the early summer months of 2024 when Levant Fire & Rescue contacted a boastful and braggadocios morning show on Q106.5.

Nobody can defeat us in cornhole.

That declaration was boldly made by David Bugenske and Jordan Verge while a very wise Cindy Campbell, the queen who puts the Q in Q106.5, shook her head in silence as if she knew the inevitable outcome.

Maine Firefighters Made the Challenge

Firefighter Steve and Fire Chief Eric Strout from Levant Fire and Rescue immediately called into the show. With a tremble of uncertainty in their voice, they challenged these two rather moronic deejays to bring their talents to Levant. With a full tank of hubris (and extreme respect and admiration for our Maine firefighters) David and Jordan promptly accepted. The date was set. July 31st, 2024, at 11am. It was a Wednesday.

The Cornhole Battle at Levant, Maine

And so, the day came, and spectators of all ages attended the proverbial bloodbath. But of whom? Who would rue the day: Levant Fire or Q106.5?

Levant Fire and Rescue pulled out all of their tricks for opening ceremonies to try and intimidate their vocal warrior opponents.

They even brought out their pug mascot to try and fiercely fend off the Q106.5 staff.

By the way, there is an incredible story behind the pug being the mascot of Levant Fire and Rescue. This author will reveal more on that and the heroics of the impressive Mainers who volunteer at Levant Fire in a later post, but this article is one of conflict and discord and where the focus must remain.

This Cornhole Competition in Maine Will Consist of One Game and Winner Takes All

Those were the terms set ... well, one game until Levant Fire & Rescue bullied their way to victory. The competition was then restructured to the best of three games. David & Jordan were down one already. It was time to strategize and intimidate with a flex of their own. It was time to go on the radio live from the firehouse.

Game 2 of The Great Cornhole Battle in Maine

Game 2 was beautiful and swift. David and Jordan knew the job that needed be done, and they clenched game 2 like Simone Biles led her team to gold.

Jordan and David couldn't stop sinking bag after bag. It was a sight to behold, and many Levant spectators were treated to greatness that so few will ever witness in several lifetimes. Firefighter Steve and Fire Chief Eric Strout knew that they were backed into a corner.

That's the only way to explain the blowout that occurred in game 3 after such a brilliant victory in game 2 by David and Jordan. How do you argue with real life heroes, right? The deejays only option was to concede. BUT - who was the loser? It's not who you think.

It was agreed on prior to competition by both parties that the LOSER would buy pizza. Levant Fire & Rescue graciously and foolishly picked up the tab for the pizza. Never one to argue semantics, it was a kind, however, unfortunate maneuver by the fire department officially crowning David and Jordan with the W.

Besides, there is absolutely no possibility Cindy, David, nor Jordan walked away the losers after developing new friendships with some of the most incredible humans. Thank you, Levant Fire, for an awesome day of sharing anecdotes, nonstop laughter, and the opportunity of getting to know the wonderful you! You are all truly heroes, albeit losers, and we are honored to call you friends.
