Well, having said that, how do we know how much the average Mainer tips? Did someone go table to table and ask each patron?

Alright, with that covered—how much does the average Mainer actually tip, and where do we stand compared to other states?
According to a recent report from Axios highlighting ‘America’s Best Tippers,’ Maine’s average tip is 20.4%, ranking 8th in the country and nearly 2% higher than the national average.
The states leading the way in tipping are Delaware at 22.1%, West Virginia at 21.0%, and New Hampshire at 20.9%.
Axios continues that the lowest tipping states are California (17.3%) and Washington (17.8%), both well below the national average of 18.8%.

And there you have it! We now have proof that Maine and Mainers are more generous—at least if you consider high tipping generous—as we tip, on average, above 20% at restaurants.
