The RCMP seized more than 100,000 contraband cigarettes Thursday during a traffic stop on the Trans-Canada Highway near Oromocto.

Police pulled over a pickup truck hauling a utility trailer at around 3:00 p.m., according to a news release from Cpl. Ryan Lewis.

The driver, a 53-year-old man from Maitland, Ontario, was arrested and later released. He is scheduled to appear in Burton Provincial Court on October 15 to face charges under the Excise Act and Tobacco Tax Act.

The RCMP New Brunswick Tactical Traffic Enforcement Unit conducted the seizure in coordination with West District RCMP.

The investigation is continuing.
