The fluffernutter’s origins trace to Melrose, Massachusetts, where Emma Curtis published a recipe for a peanut butter and marshmallow creme sandwich called the “Liberty Sandwich” in 1918.

The recipe promoted her family’s Snowflake Marshmallow Creme and used oat or barley bread during World War I, when Americans were encouraged to conserve wheat and meat.

Separately, Archibald Query developed Marshmallow Fluff in nearby Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1917, providing the spread later associated with the sandwich.

In 1960, an advertising agency working for Fluff manufacturer Durkee-Mower coined the name “Fluffernutter” to help market the peanut butter and marshmallow combination.

The sandwich went on to become a familiar lunchbox favorite across New England for generations.

It even has its own annual observance, National Fluffernutter Day, celebrated Oct. 8.
