Even though, these days, we have all kinds of electronic entertainment at our fingertips, it is often fun to go old school with our weekend activities.  This is especially true for families with small kids.  Sometimes, you just want them to put the tablets and video games down so you can have some family fun outside.

One of the most affordable ways to get the family outside and active during the winter months is to take them skating.  Unlike a lot of winter activities, it does not require the purchase of a lot of expensive equipment (you can usually rent skates at the rink) and it is a fairly easy activity for people to learn.

There are ice skating rinks scattered around Maine, but if you are looking for the ultimate skating experience you need to check out the largest ice skating rink in Maine.

Ice Skating At Sugarloaf Mountain

Most of us think of Sugarloaf as a great place to ski and snowboard.  This is true, but the place has so much more to offer.  It really is a world class resort with many different activities, restaurants, entertainment, and more.

One of the really cool family activities they offer is ice skating on the largest ice skating rink in Maine.  This outdoor rink is NHL regulation size and it is massive!

The rink measures 200 feet long by 85 feet wide.  This means it has 17,000 square feet of skatable space!

The skating rink typically opens for the season in mid-December and it remains open through the middle of March.  Of course, this is largely dependent on the weather.  The rink is open from 9 AM to 5 PM.  However, during vacation weeks, they extend those hours to 9 AM to 7 PM.
