Homeless Veterans Services Increased Thanks to Elks
For the last two years, the Furniture Bank for Homeless Veterans has been operating, thanks to the Presque Isle Elks, Lodge #1954.
The furniture bank has operated from its location on the Presque Isle Industrial Park. It's there that veterans, who were previously homeless, are able to choose from a large selection of furniture for their homes that they now have been placed in. The vets are able to choose from lamps, desks, box springs and mattresses, nightstands and more. These furnishings were obtained from various hotels that have undergone renovations.
In 2018, these previously homeless veterans were given, by the Presque Isle Elks Lodge, a Welcome Home Kit, worth up to $400. Household items that vets could purchase were cookware and utensils, silverware, bedding, towels, cleaning supplies, even a bed frame.
Beginning the first of May, the Presque Isle Elks with a grant from the Elks National Foundation, were able to buy a variety of small appliances that these formerly homeless veterans could also select from at the Furniture Bank. They include microwaves, toaster ovens, TVs, and stereos.
