The federal Department of Justice is sending the money to the Penobscot Indian Nation. It is expected to help the tribe support local police efforts.

The grant is part of the Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation Grant Program. The program allows federally recognized tribes to more efficiently apply for tribal grant programs.

Officials say the money can be used to hire or re-hire law enforcement officers, buy equipment or help with training to improve local police work.
