ACAP Offers Two Opportunities for Women

Two upcoming opportunities for Aroostook County women will allow them to explore new career paths.

The opportunities are possible thanks to collaborations with Aroostook County Action Program’s Women in Apprenticeships and Non-Traditional Occupations and community partners at Northern Maine Community College and MSAD#1 Adult and Community Education.

The first opportunity will be a Women in Trades workshop scheduled for Wednesday, August 7, at NMCC. The day begins in the NMCC Edmunds Center at 10 a.m. with a panel of HR people from McCain, Huber, MDOT, and the new plant in Washburn that is scheduled to open in spring of 2020. This event is similar to the Totally Trades event held for middle and high school girls, except this will be for women. The morning session will consist of a presentation by a panel of women working in non-traditional jobs. The afternoon session will feature presentations in the CDL/truck driving, plumbing and heating, MDOT and precision metals fields. The day will wrap up with a tour of NMCC’s other labs. Aroostook County women are encouraged to attend. Should you need it, transportation will be available from Houlton, Caribou, Madawaska and Fort Kent. The 2nd opportunity for women is a 10-week healthcare academy that will help prepare women for entry-level positions in healthcare, such as patient representative. The academy will allow women to get their foot into the door of the healthcare industry and learn what other pathways are available. The course is a combination of online and on-site (Presque Isle Adult Ed). The curriculum includes a variety of topics including career skills for healthcare, math for healthcare, basic anatomy, electronic health record, medical terminology, First Aid/CPR and more. Transportation for the on-site courses is available through ACAP’s Women in Apprenticeships and Non-Traditional Occupations program.
