A 13-year-old was taken to the hospital Tuesday morning after crashing an electric scooter into the side of a pickup truck in Bath.

Electric Scooter Hit the Side of Truck in Roadway

The Bath Police Department said the teen male “was riding an electric scooter to school crossing Congress Ave from Lincoln Street in the intersection and struck the left side of a pickup truck that was already in the intersection."

13-Year-Old Taken to the Hospital

The teen was taken to the hospital as a precaution by the Bath Fire and Rescue Department.

Crash During Morning School Commute

The crash happened during the morning school commute around 7:35 am.

Witnesses Said Child Did Not Stop at Crossing

Police spoke to eyewitnesses who said the 13-year-old did not stop before crossing the intersection. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Statement for Safety from the Chief of Police

Bath Police Chief Andrew Booth issued a statement regarding the importance of safety for children:

"This crash highlights the importance of obeying the rules of the road when operating a motorized or electric scooter, bicycle, or other mode of transport popular with children. Children under the age of 16 must wear a proper helmet and obey traffic control devices like any other motorist. Parents need to ensure their children understand these rules. We are relieved that this crash resulted in no significant injury."
