To kick off the new year, the RCMP is encouraging all parents to be aware and vigilant about their children's activities and connections online.

Recently, the RCMP Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit manifested four children, whose ages ranged between eight and 12-years old in New Brunswick who voluntarily shared nude videos or pictures of themselves before making them available to the public on different free websites.

Sgt. Chantal Farrah with the New Brunswick RCMP said,

"Many young people also don't realize that publicly sharing images or videos of a sexual nature of a person under the age of 18 is a child pornography offence."

The RCMP would like for parents and guardians to take note of the following tips and guidelines to think about when their children are logging on to the internet.

  • Know What Sites They Are Visiting - If you're having a hard time getting a hold on your child's online activity, most internet providers offer tools to restrict or limit dangerous and questionable websites
  • Monitoring - Be sure to monitor your child's various devices that they access the internet on. Devices such as, but not limited to smartphones, gaming consoles, and tablets
  • Have A Chat - Be sure to talk to your child about what is and is not appropriate viewing for online viewing. Also talk to them about what is and what is not appropriate photos, videos and other activity online
  • Rules - You may consider writing up a contract with rules on them for you to go over with your child and have them sign. You can make this a point of conversation between you and your child on a regular basis
