Presque Isle Elks Host Area Hoop Shoot Competition on Sunday
Boys and girls ages 8 through 13 will be competing Sunday in the annual Hoop Shoot free throw contest at Wieden Gymnasium of the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Fifty-seven youngsters from throughout central Aroostook County, including Ashland, Caribou, Easton, Limestone, Mapleton, Mars Hill, Presque Isle, New Sweden, Washburn, and Woodland, will begin the competition at 9:00 a.m. Registration is at 8:00.
Hoop Shoot is a national foul shooting competition for youth sponsored by the Grand Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. William Sewall has been the Presque Isle Elks Hoop Shoot chairman for over 35 years.
“All of the competitors on Sunday have already won their age categories and divisions at their local school or recreation program’s Hoop Shoot contest, Sewall said. "The three categories for contestants are ages 8 and 9; ages 10 and 11; and ages 12 and 13 years for both boys and girls divisions.”
Competitors, in two different rounds, attempt a total of 25 foul shots each. The shooter in each age category and division who has the greatest number of successful shots is the winner. In the event of a tie, there are shoot-offs of five additional foul shot attempts by each of the tied competitors until a winner emerges.
The winners in each age category and division are then eligible to compete in the District-wide Hoop Shoot to be held on Sunday, January 15 at Bangor High School. A State-wide, New England and national Hoop Shoot competition will follow.
Admission to Sunday's Hoop Shoot competition at UMPI is free and open to the public.
