Milk Truck Overturns on Icy Highway in Southern Aroostook

Police say a Houlton Farms Dairy delivery truck overturned in Monticello early Monday morning after it hit slush and ice on US Route 1.

Maine State Police responded to the crash at approximately 3: 45 a.m., according to Corporal Dennis Quint. Police say 37-year-old Brian Little of Houlton was driving a 2009 Sterling box truck loaded with dairy products north on Route 1.

"The truck started to slide to the right due to slush and ice on the roadway," Quint said.  It slid into the break-down lane, hit the snow bank, and rolled onto its left side.

Little was able to free himself from the truck and was taken by private vehicle to Houlton Regional Hospital with "non-serious injuries."  Police say Little was wearing his seat belt.

Both north and south bound lanes of Route1 were blocked for about 45 minutes while the truck was righted.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection responded to the scene due to hazardous fluids leaking from the truck. Maine Department of Transportation assisted with traffic while the truck was removed.

This is the third time a milk truck has overturned on Maine roads recently.  A accident on I-295 in Canaan, Maine  January claimed the life of a milk truck driver who swerved to avoid a vehicle that pulled in front of him.  Another milk delivery truck overturned in Prospect, Maine on Friday, sending the driver to the hospital with minor injuries.
