Maine Ranks as One of the Best States for Women’s Equality
As Women’s Equality Day approaches this year, a recent study shows that our Pine Tree State is one of the best in the country!
Women’s Equality Day, celebrated on August 26th, marks the anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in the United States. This day honors the progress made in the fight for gender equality.
The 19th Amendment, adopted in 1920, ensured that no one could be denied the right to vote based on their sex. Women’s Equality Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to achieve full equality for all.
Maine ranks as one of the best states for women’s equality, but how is that determined?
WalletHub’s report on the 'Best & Worst States for Women’s Equality (2024)' examines how women are treated compared to men across the U.S. To determine where women receive the most equal treatment, WalletHub analyzed all 50 states using 17 key indicators of gender equality.
These indicators include differences in leadership roles, such as the percentage of female legislators and CEOs, as well as disparities in unemployment rates between women and men. The report highlights that, despite women making up over half of the population, they are still underrepresented in top positions, with only 9% of S&P 500 CEOs being women.
So, where did our state rank in the report?
Maine is one of the top states for women’s equality, ranking 4th overall in the country. It's particularly impressive in terms of political empowerment, where Maine holds the top spot.
This means that women in Maine have strong representation and influence in politics. Additionally, Maine ranks 1st in closing the political representation gap.
