Heroin overdoses are on the rise across the state of Maine, according to health officials.

In addition to seeing a dramatic increase in the drug in areas, like Portland, authorities say that emergency medical responders have been called out to some 14 heroin overdoes, three of which ended in the patient’s death, over the course of the past month.

What’s more is that officials in Portland report that on Wednesday alone medical treatment was administered to four people who had accidentally overdosed on the powerful opiate, with a fifth person being found dead in their apartment from a suspected drug overdose.

Authorities say that the heroin trend is becoming more widespread as addicts look for a more economical way to replace hard to get prescription painkillers, like oxycontin.
