State Police say the drivers of five vehicles involved in a chain reaction crash on Interstate 295 this morning escaped serious injury.

The crash took place in the southbound lanes between the two Freeport exits.   Just prior to the crash, Troopers had stopped a car in the breakdown lane and motorists began slowing down after seeing the cruiser’s emergency lights.  The first car struck had slowed down suddenly and was rear-ended by another, which started the chain reaction.

In all, two SUVs, two passenger cars and a tractor trailer were involved, shutting down the southbound lanes for about an hour. Traffic was backed up into Brunswick.  The only driver injured was 26 year old Samantha Marceau of Biddeford.  She had a minor head injury and was taken to Maine Medical Center.

Freeport Police  and the Maine Department of Transportation worked with troopers to get the highway reopened.  No one was cited.
