Speed and alcohol are cited as factors in a snowmobile crash that claimed the lives of a man and his young son in Hermon early Sunday morning.

The Maine Warden Service says 33-year-old Jason Tracy of Hermon and his 10-year-old son were killed when the snowmobile they were riding struck a tree on the edge of a field at around 1:00 a.m.

Game Wardens, State Police Troopers and Penobscot County Deputies worked throughout the night investigating the crash scene. Officials say Tracy’s son was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but Mr. Tracy was not.

Warden Lt. Dan Scott cited speed and alcohol as contributing factors in the accident and indicated wardens continue to investigate.

“EMS units from Hermon Fire and Rescue, Levant Fire and Rescue and Capital Ambulance all assisted and were very helpful with the incident,” Scott said.

The Maine Warden Service reminds riders to slow down, never drink and ride, and be conscious of hazards and other riders on the trails.

This was the fifth fatal snowmobile accident in Maine this year, including a crash Saturday that killed a Smithfield man.
