Come Face-To-Face With Your Food At Maine Open Farm Day This Sunday
It began back in 1989 as a way to raise awareness of the importance of what Maine farmers were doing on land across the state.
35 years later, it's still going strong.
Maine "Open Farm Day" is always held on the 4th Sunday in July, according to the state's website.
"It is an opportunity to connect visitors to Maine farms so they may learn and see firsthand the care and effort to produce quality Maine farm products and ingredients year-round. Each site is different and offers visitors a chance to meet farmers and learn more about the role of farms across Maine."
As someone who has taken their kids to many an "Open Farm Day", I can share with you that once you (or your kids) see just what goes into raising and caring for both crops and livestock and what the process of harvesting things like eggs and veggies to get them ready to be sold is like, so they can then make their way to dinner tables across the state, you will always keep that in mind when sitting down to a meal made possible by a farmer.
There's a newfound level of respect and appreciation for the work that goes into farm life, and that's really what it's all about!
You'll likely meet a cow or horse or pig..or a dozen. Some farms have roosters and chickens. Others have bunnies and goats.
The Real Maine website says it best:
"It’s not every day you get to see where food is grown, how yarn is made, or get to meet the caretakers of Maine farm animals and wildlife. But thanks to the annual tradition of Maine Open Farm Day, you have a unique chance to do that and learn about the business of agriculture where it happens!
If you’re planning to attend this special day, you’ll want to learn what to see and do, and how to make the most of your visit.
Most farms are open from about 10 AM until about 3 PM this coming Sunday July 28th, but you can find the exact time, locations, and names of the farms taking part in this year's "Open Farm Day", by clicking here.
I recommend you wear comfy clothes and footwear that you don't mind getting dirty. Packing some extra hand wipes and sanitizer is a good idea, too.
Go check out what these Maine farms have to offer, and learn about how your food gets from the farm to your table.
It's pretty neat.
