Ask O’Brien – Two Questions Combined!
Today I’m hoping to answer two questions at the same time. Those questions are pretty difficult to ponder but I think the answer is probably the same for both. Opinions vary of course, but since this is my little space then mine is the only one that matters.
The first question is: “Who do you consider to be the best band that has ever existed? “ Before I answer that let me hit you with the second question, “If you could go back in time to see a band that isn't around anymore, what band would you see and why?” Yes, the answer to both is probably one you expected: The Beatles. Let me defend myself.
It seems like a stock answer, I know, but if you put yourself back in that time where music was so homogenized and squeaky clean it made you sick, you’ll see my point. The Beatles opened the doors and let other musicians say, “Ahhhh, we can do that?” For that simple reason I think they were the best band ever. If we didn’t have The Beatles, what direction do you think music might have gone? True, someone may have eventually come along but in our case it was the four lads from Liverpool.
The key phrase in the second question is “go back.” If I could have been a fly on the wall in The Cavern Club and seen the Beatles as they were busting wide open; or been around when they made their first American television appearance, I think it would blow my mind. There’s so much history there. So many branches on the rock and roll tree sprouted the day The Beatles were on Ed Sullivan.
