The Amtrak Downeaster is one of the best ways to travel from Maine to Boston. No sitting in traffic, no filling up on gas, and a comfortable seat for the entire ride. As a train geek, I love traveling on the Downeaster and looking out the window like I was still the 6-year-old boy I used to be.

The route for the Downeaster runs as far north as Brunswick and as far south as Boston. You're less likely to see much in the way of foliage as you get closer to the city of Boston, but between Brunswick and Dover, if you time it right, you will have many opportunities to see the fall colors as you look out your window.

Tickets Starting at $7

What you pay to ride The Downeaster depends on how much of the trip you are going to take. In the fall, there are plenty of towns and cities on the route that you could spend the day visiting while enjoying the fall scenery on your train ride.

According to Daily Wise, a ticket is just $7 from Dover, New Hampshire, to Exeter, and it's only a 20-minute trip.
