On June 12th of this year, the Presque Isle Air Museum is set to officially celebrate its 20th anniversary.

To make it really official, the Presque Isle City Council recently issued a proclamation naming the week of June 9 through June 15 as Presque Isle Air Museum week.

Founded in 1999 by eight individuals, the air museum was intended to honor those from the Presque Isle area who served during the Second World War and the Cold War years at Presque Isle’s air base by chronicling, displaying and promoting awareness of the unique development of aviation history in Presque Isle. The museum tracks the early beginnings of aviation in Presque Isle in the 1930s all the way up to the present.

A recent event the museum brought to the area was a squadron of vintage C-47 aircraft that landed in Presque Isle on their way to celebrate the 75th anniversary of D-Day in France. About 35 of the C47s flew over Normandy, France on June 6, 2019 in commemoration of the anniversary.  Of these, 14 were from the U.S. and 12 of those recently made a stop in Presque Isle on their way to Normandy.

The Presque Isle Air Museum is situated at the south end of the Presque Isle International Airport terminal and is open whenever the terminal is open.  For more information, you can contact the museum by email at piarimuseum@hotmail.com or by leaving a voice mail at (207) 554-2343.
