9th Fatal Snowmobile Accident in Maine

The Maine Warden Service says a Massachusetts woman has died in a snowmobile accident in the town of Wayne.

Wardens say 56-year-old Martha Carroll of Brighton, Mass. was killed when the snowmobile she was operating crashed into some trees at a high rate of speed on the west shore of Wilson Pond just after sunset Saturday.

Speed, alcohol and inexperience all appear to be factors in the crash, wardens say.

This is the ninth snowmobiling fatality in Maine this winter.  Mark Latti of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said the record for snowmobiling deaths in Maine was 16 during the 2002-03 season.
