A 41-year-old man died Saturday night after hitting a bridge rail and being partially ejected from a van on I-95 in Benton.

Speed and Alcohol Appear to be Factors

The Maine State Police said “speed and alcohol appear to be factors in this crash.”

Driver Partially Ejected from Vehicle

Jed Carpenter from Harrington was driving a Ford Econoline Van when he lost control on the Kennebec River Bridge, struck a rail, and was partially ejected from the vehicle.

Died at the Scene

Carpenter was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, said police. The crash happened around 9 pm Saturday.

Interstate Lanes Closed

“The Interstate was diminished to one lane while crews worked to remove Carpenter’s body,” said Shannon Moss, Public Information Officer, Maine Department of Public Safety.
