The following tragic story is a lie.  When I was a kid we had a cocker spaniel named ‘Chico.’  We loved that dog and took care of it as best we could.  Although we lived in town, we had a potato field near our backyard and every once in a while we let him run loose.  He would always come back.

One day we came home from school to find that Chico was missing.  Our mother told us he had run away.  A week or so later he was spotted downtown so a family friend followed him to the home of an old woman who claimed, despite our dog collar, Chico belonged to her.  The family friend told the woman we were going to take her to court.

When the court date came (we were kids, so we didn’t go), the woman had put the dog to sleep because if she couldn’t have him than no one could.  Evil, I know.

We’re older now and were sitting around talking with family and brought up Chico.  Turns out memories fade as time goes on and there was no court date.  We never got a straight answer as to what happened to our pet so we assume he was either given up because of the hassle, killed by a vehicle or simply ran away.  Even though we were young, I think we could have taken the truth.

What lie were you fed when you were young, in order to protect your feelings?  Tell us on Facebook.
