Well-Known Virus Recently Detected in Maine, CDC Confirms
One of the most recognizable—yet dangerous viruses in the world was recently confirmed and detected here in Maine.
Listen—after everything we’ve learned over the past five years, we know that when the Maine CDC issues a statement, it’s worth paying attention to. The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s mission is to protect the health and well-being of Maine people by preventing disease and promoting safe, healthy communities.
So, given all of that, as confirmed by the Maine CDC, what virus has recently been identified in our Pine Tree State?
The Maine CDC has confirmed the state’s first human case of Powassan virus this year in a Hancock County resident, along with the first wild bird case of West Nile virus, found in York County.

The Maine CDC continues to urge residents and visitors to protect themselves from tick and mosquito bites, as these viruses can lead to lasting health impacts.
Powassan is a rare but serious tickborne illness that can cause severe neurologic symptoms, while West Nile virus can lead to flu-like symptoms or, in rare cases, more serious complications.
Mosquitoes in Maine can carry serious viruses like West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and Jamestown Canyon virus, and the best way to avoid illness is to prevent bites.
According to the Maine CDC, they test wild birds during mosquito season to monitor virus activity and recommend using EPA-approved repellents, wearing protective clothing, and checking for ticks daily to help protect people, pets, and livestock.

And there you have it! According to the Maine CDC, an individual in Maine has officially been identified with the first wild bird case of West Nile virus infection this year.
