One of Southern Maine's most well-known bowling alleys is closing after 34 years in business in Saco.

Vacationland Bowling, owned and operated by Bert and Claire Dube, has been the location of at least one birthday party for every kid in southern Maine since 1983. It's one of the few Candlepin bowling alleys in the area, offering the classic form of the game found only in New England and maritime Canada.

Vacationland has also been the home to thousands of tournaments and league games and over the years, with a reputation for a clean, fun and family-friendly experience.

In a post on their facebook page this week, the Dubes announced that the land has been sold to Southern Maine Motors, for expanded service and vehicle storage.

The alley will remain open until mid-October. Thanks for all the great memories!

Dear Bowlers,
It is with a heavy heart that after 34 years we are closing Vacationland Bowling Center in mid October. We had anticipated staying open until March 2017, but the purchaser has exercised their right to take ownership sooner than expected. The building and land are being purchased by Southern Maine Motors for expanded service and vehicle storage.
This has been a really hard decision for us. Because of our age, health and wanting to spend more time with our family, we have decided to retire.
As we make this decision to close, we realize how important the bowling center is to so many people. Friendships were formed here, future spouses met here, family memories were made here, and youth bowlers spent time with friends and families learning a lifetime skill in a safe environment.
"But bowling alleys are always about more than the game." As Harvard sociologist Robert Putnam famously observed in 2000's Bowling Alone, "bowling leagues bring together people from all walks of life." We certainly feel this way too. Words cannot express our appreciation for the loyalty of our customers. We wish the timing of our closing was better and we apologize for any inconvenience we have caused.
We have never closed a business before, but Vacationland Bowling Center and our staff will be working with our customers during this transition to address any concerns or questions. It is our loyal customers and friends that we will miss the most. Thank you for your understanding.
Goodbye for now, Bert and Claire Dube"
