A project to help Aroostook County children be well prepared to begin the new school year is about to kick off.

Once again, United Way of Aroostook is partnering with Townsquare Media, Walmart in Houlton and Presque Isle, Aroostook County Action Program and Adopt-A-Block Aroostook will be helping eligible families with a backpack and school supplies to start off the new school year. The group will be collecting new backpacks and school supplies at various locations throughout the County. Backpacks and supplies can be dropped of at United Way of Aroostook’s office located inside the Aroostook Centre Mall or at drop off boxes at both the Presque Isle and Houlton Walmarts.

Townsquare Media, with the help of generous sponsors at North Country Auto and Verizon Wireless Zone in Presque Isle, will be broadcasting live at Walmart in Houlton on Thursday, July 18th from 3:00-6:00 pm and again on Friday, July 19th at the Presque Isle Walmart, again from 3:00-6:00 pm.  This will be an opportunity for community members to help “Stuff the Bus.”  Donors are encouraged to purchase backpacks, notebooks, pencils/pens, crayons/markers, erasers, scissors and other school supplies to help the efforts.

Sherry Locke, Executive Director of United Way of Aroostook, says the support of the community is vital. “We depend on the generosity of many to serve many.”

Over 700 backpacks were distributed to deserving Aroostook County kids last year. Filled backpacks will be distributed by Adopt-A-Block Aroostook and ACAP at their end of summer celebration events.
