Globally Recognized Art Project Brings ‘Whimsy and Energy’ to Bangor, Maine
A world-renowned art project has returned to downtown Bangor.
The Umbrella Sky Project includes over 170 art installations worldwide, including one that has taken over Cross Street for the third year in a row.
It features umbrellas hanging above the street, along with upside down umbrella benches and flower planters.
Launch party held in Bangor
The city celebrated the return of the project with the Night Under the Umbrella Sky launch party last Friday.
The event, which was free to the public, included live music, sweet treats, giveaways and community activities, and unique public art and photo opportunities.
The launch party was sponsored by Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center.
About the Umbrella Sky Project
The project began in 2011 as part of the annual Ágitagueda Art Festival in Águeda, Portugal, according to Downtown Bangor.
"This globally recognized outdoor art installation, inspired by Mary Poppins, has brought whimsy and energy to cities around the world — and continues to make its mark here in Bangor," Downtown Bangor says.

According to Impactplan, the Portuguese creative agency behind the art installation, "The motto of this project is to color life, bring color to the gray spaces of the city and tear smiles on those who pass by! A simple idea that brings life and protection to public spaces and at the same time transports us to a fantasy world."
The art installation will be on display in Bangor until mid-October.
