Two Arrested After Pill Seizure in Southern Maine

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency has arrested two Brunswick-area men after the seizure of over 4,000 pills, valued on the street at $30,000.  Drug agents say the men were getting the pills by mail and selling them.

On Wednesday, MDEA agents from the Mid-Coast District Task Force along with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations and Topsham Police searched Steers’ residence in Topsham. Over 4,000 pharmaceutical pills including Oxycodone and Valium were seized along with steroids and a loaded handgun, according to MDEA Commander Scott Pelletier.

Arrested were 45-year-old Benjamin Steers of Topsham for Trafficking in Oxycodone and 35-year-old Scott Crone of Freeport for Illegal Importation of Valium and Violation of Conditions of Release.

Drug agents say Crone ordered the pills from foreign countries, which were delivered by U.S. mail to Steer’s home. The drugs would then be sold throughout Sagadahoc and Cumberland counties, Pelletier said.

Steers was transported to the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset and is now free on bail. Crone is being held without bail because of a prior domestic violence charge.

The U.S Postal Service and Sagadahoc Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the case. Pelletier said the investigation is continuing and additional charges are likely.
